American Portrait
words and music copyright Lee Bridgers 1985

She uses beauty to help us forget
Just how ugly, how brutal, how arrogant she's become,
Now that life is things to possess.
Can't you see?
All we are doing is building an idol to our worthlessness.

What good's the money. She's so pathetically poor,
Alone hopeless, so helpless that she pours
Jewels and fine woven things over herself,
But can't she see?
All she is doing is painting a picture of her worthlessness.

She uses beauty to help us forget
Just how ugly, how brutal, how arrogant
She's become now that life is things to possess.
Can't you see? All we are doing is building an idol to our worthlessness.
